The Indian Golf Union (IGU) launched the Indian Amateur Golf Tour for the year 2011

This year edition will witness 12 events in different parts of India including Delhi, Mumbai and Kolkata. All the commercial and marketing rights has been given to Par Sports Leisure Adventure Management Pvt Ltd (SLAM G).

Praising the organisers for their vision and approach to promote amateur golf in India, professional golfer Gaganjeet Bhullar said, "Amateur golf is the backbone of Indian golf." This is one area which we are lacking in and I am sure with SLAM G, many more sponsors will be roped in and it’s going to promote amateur golf on large scale.

Amateur golf provides junior players necessary exposure and help them grow as a golfer. Such tours have given us several good players like Jeev Milkha Singh and Jyoti Randhawa.

"I wish all the very best to all amateur players who are going to play for India," he added.

Former India captain Amit Luthra, won the Gold Medal in the 1982 Asian Games, said "We need to have a strong base of amateur golfers to grow up as a golf body. We cannot think about prospering without them." IGU president Rohit Amin said, "This Tour showcases the best talent in the country."

Legendary Nick Faldo to design Indian golf course

Six-time Major champion, Nick Faldo has an eye on India. The booming Indian golf market has lured the legendary Englishman to India, where he is expected to start a signature golf course project next year.

"We are very close to selecting a property in India. The course will be in Delhi, which is the hub of golfing in India, and we are hopeful that construction work will start by early next year," Nick Edmund, managing director of Faldo Design, told IANS.

Faldo Design is a leading international golf course design company that was founded by Faldo more than two decades back.

Edmund said Faldo was yet to see any property in India but would obviously come down to inaugurate the project once the deal was finalised.

Edmund, who was on a two-day tour to India, visited some of the properties in and around Delhi and has also had talks with some leading developers. The project, expected to start early in 2008, will be inaugurated by Faldo himself.

"I haven't seen many golf courses in India. But I did see a few to have a feel of the business in India. It is very important to have a feel of the business before taking the final plunge," said Edmund.

The company has designed 21 courses in Asia, including in China, the Philippines, Vietnam, South Korea and Thailand. Besides Asia, Faldo Design has also completed projects in 20 different countries in Europe and the US.

"We have 21 completed projects in Asia. In three weeks' time we will have a course in Cambodia very near to the historical Angkor Vat temple. We made our entry in Asia in the early 90s with China, which has been a very busy market for us. India is now a key market for Faldo Design," said Edmund.

When asked why it took long for Faldo Design to venture into the Indian market, Edmund said: "There wasn't a market in India 10-15 years ago. If we had started a project then it would have suffered a fate similar to what happened to our project in Russia. We are building a world class golf course in Russia but it has already taken five years and is still not complete.

"Golf is no more a minority game in India now. With the capital market growing, the sport has also grown and we are confident that we will have a world-class project in India soon. It will take three years for the course to come up and will come at a cost of $10-15 million," he revealed.

On the conditions required for a course, Edmund said, "You have to be very conscious of the climate, right grass, water supply, right equipment, developer. These things are the basic ingredients for a good golf course. A country like Thailand is much ahead of India in terms of golf course business.

"But these skills are gradually emerging in India also and I think in the next five years this country will become a significant golf destination."

Edmund also said that the course would be very typical to Faldo's own style of play, which always lays emphasis on strategy.

Faldo, who won the British Open and Augusta Masters three times each, is the most successful British golfer. Now 50, he divides his time between commentating, golf course designing and promoting the Faldo Series of golf events for juniors - one of which is held in India - and also plays on Seniors Tour.

But for now, Faldo Design has one ace - read golf course - in the works for India. And if things go the way Faldo and Edmund visualise, there's a lot more to come.

"The course was playing very tough today and I think I was not hitting the way I wanted. I am glad that chipping and putting really saved me and I could finish with the best score of the day, Abhijit, the winner of the Faldo series Asia grand final 2011, said.

Rahul Bajaj of Noida, who recently won the silver medal in Asian Games, did not play very well as he returned with the score of five-over 77 while Arshad Ali, the winner of recently held Haryana Open, ended the day with the score of six-over 78.

Focus on Indian golf as Asian Tour returns for SAIL Open

The focus falls back on India next week when the Asian Tour returns for the SAIL Open, reflecting the growing importance of the sub-continent in the professional golf scene. The Avantha Masters raised the curtains for the 2011 Asian Tour season last month while the SAIL Open will maintain the momentum at the Delhi Golf Club from March 22 to 25 (Tuesday to Friday).

While cricket continues to dominate headlines, golf in India has certainly taken a giant leap in popularity, thanks largely to the unwavering support from sponsors, the PGTI and memorable victories by the Indian golf stars.

With a deep pool of talent available in the country, it is no surprise that India holds the record for producing the most number of Asian Tour Order of Merit winners through Jeev Milkha Singh in 2006 and 2008, Jyoti Randhawa, the country’s first Asian number one in 2002 and Arjun Atwal, winner in 2003.

Atwal has reiterated time and again on how he benefited greatly from competing on the Asian Tour which subsequently provided his launch pad onto the PGA Tour where he became the first Indian to win in the United States last year.

In total, Singh, Randhawa and Atwal have won a combined 21 Asian Tour titles and have notched collective earnings of US$7,192,162.

Singh, who is currently second on the Asian Tour career earnings with over US$2 million, hailed the Asian Tour’s presence in India where 14 tournaments amounting to a staggering US$13.5 million have been staged over the last seven years.

“This is where I started from and I will never forget that,” said Singh, who is also an Asian Tour Honorary Member. “The way the Asian Tour has grown is fantastic to see. I feel and strongly believe that the Asian Tour will continue to grow and produce top-class players.”

In recent times, players such as S.S.P. Chowrasia have grown into a world-class performers, thanks largely to victories in co-sanctioned events with the European Tour. Chowrasia currently leads the Asian Tour’s Order of Merit following his victory in the Avantha Masters last month.

“The Asian Tour has given me a lot of opportunities to enhance my career and my life,” said Chowrasia, the son of a greenskeeper.

Atwal believes that the Indian newcomers now have every opportunity to sharpen their professional teeth on the Asian Tour.

“My first Qschool was in 1995 and just to learn how to make cuts and finally be in contention and finally win, all those I learnt on the Asian Tour,” said Atwal. “Those were the best years of my life. I still say it. I had so much fun and everyone are so close. You still see the guys out here, it’s great.”

Gaurav Ghei, Feroz Ali, Shiv Kapur and C. Muniyappa have also etched their names onto the Asian Tour’s winners circle with life-changing victories and have paved the way for the emergence of a new breed of young Indian hopefuls.

Gaganjeet Bhullar is touted as one of the brightest prospects to emerge and is well on his way to fulfilling his ambitions as India’s next big thing. After winning two Asian Tour titles, Bhullar will carry the weight on his shoulder where he will lead a cast of talented Indians including Anirban Lahiri and Himmat Rai into a new and exciting chapter for Indian golf.

With such magical moments decorating the annals of golf history in India, it is only a matter of time before the sport reaches the pinnacle of its potential.
